Skills-based strategies are the focus at FABIC and support people with lasting behaviour change so that they feel equipped to deal with whatever life lessons are being presented to them. If you have a person who’s being asked to tie their shoelaces but they don’t yet have the necessary skills, the question becomes, “How do we support you to develop the skills to tie your shoelaces, making it something you can do independently?”
Life presents various challenges beyond just tying our shoelaces – there are people to spend time with, there are families, workplaces, tasks and activities plus the sensory experiences of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching and feeling. We are immersed in life all day every day, and there are parts of life that we have the skills to respond to and other parts where we don’t yet feel equipped to respond.
Skills-based strategies are used to support individuals when developing the ability to deal with whatever life lesson is presented to them. They lead to feeling equipped to actively be a part of life rather than react to the life lesson in front of them and withdraw. Skills-based strategies pave the way to increased capacity, more independence and more joy in life.
