Behaviour Support Practitioner Services
Our NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioners offer lasting behaviour change through connection, skills building, empowerment and collaboration.
We empower teams to support positive and lasting behaviour change

At FABIC, we’re committed to lasting behaviour change by empowering the people who matter most – participants and their everyday support teams. Our Behaviour Support Practitioners lead the way in assessments, planning, hands-on training, and ongoing guidance, with a strong focus on inclusion, cultural responsiveness, and making our own role redundant by supporting others with positive behaviour change strategies that last.
Our philosophy
1 participant = 1 community
We work with a community to support lasting change
Our Step-by-Step Behaviour Support Process
We follow a structured, best-practice approach to ensure that eligible participants receive a behaviour support plan tailored to their unique needs, and support teams are offered opportunities to equip themselves to deliver lasting, positive outcomes.
Step 1 – Interim Behaviour Support Plans
Immediate Support: When restrictive practices have been identified, we act with speed to develop Interim Behaviour Support Plans (IBSPs) within the first month, addressing Risk of Harm Behaviours and prioritising safety.
Risk Management: These plans outline strategies for immediate risk management and, as needed, include clear protocols for restrictive practices (always aiming for the least restrictive practice required to maximise safety).
Cost-Effective Delivery: Where possible, we coordinate appointments to minimise costs (e.g., shared travel or telehealth options).
Step 2 – Functional Behaviour Assessment
Understanding the Individual: Our Behaviour Support Practitioners take the time to understand each participant by conducting needs-based assessments, risk assessments, and functional behaviour assessments. We bring focus to a participant’s strengths, needs, and the reasons behind concerning behaviours.
I WONDER WHY is one of our favourite questions:
Holistic Approach: We consult with the participant, their family, and extended support team, review relevant data, and observe in natural environments to gather a comprehensive understanding of factors influencing behaviour use.
Inclusion-Focused: Assessments focus on how the participant functions in everyday routines and activities, promoting meaningful participation in family and community life.
Step 3 – Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan
Individualised Planning: Within six months (often earlier) of beginning services, we develop a Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan tailored to the participant’s goals, routines, and cultural background.
Strategies for lasting change: Plans include proactive/preventive supports, environmental adjustments, skill-building, and response strategies, always aiming for positive, lasting change.
Restrictive Practices: If restrictive practices are implemented for safety purposes, a restrictive practice protocol is developed and paired with strategies to reduce and ultimately eliminate their use over time, in line with NDIS and legislative requirements.
Culturally Responsive: Every plan is respectful of cultural beliefs and community connections, delivered in a clear, flexible, and accessible manner.
Step 4 – Training and Supporting the Support Team
The support team includes any formal Implementing Providers, as well as family, friends, and other on-the-ground supporters who assist the participant in everyday life. We recognise the on-the-ground support team is crucial to facilitating lasting change, as they often spend the most time with participants and are key to building skills, confidence, independence, and capacity for positive behavioural change.
Training the support team includes:
Behaviour Support Plan Training: The FABIC Behaviour Support team provides training for implementing both Interim and Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans, ensuring support teams are equipped to deliver effective and consistent strategies. Participation in this training is an NDIS requirement for implementing providers, supporting compliance and best practice in behaviour support.
Hands-On Training: The FABIC Behaviour Support practitioners offer practical, participant-specific training, model strategies, and provide ongoing training and guidance to the on-the-ground support teams.
Collaborative Learning: Training can be delivered directly to the support team or with the participant present, always tailored to the participant’s and their support team’s specific requirements.
Building Capacity: We focus on developing the skills and confidence of the support team, recognising they are with the participant every day and are key to motivating and supporting the implementation of lasting change strategies
Step 5 – Collaborative, Team-Focused Support
Working Together: We see the participant, their family, and the support team as equal partners in the process. Plans are developed and reviewed collaboratively, with everyone’s input valued.
Community Links: We help build connections with community resources and other agencies, ensuring that supports are coordinated and comprehensive for the participant.
Ongoing Guidance: Our behaviour support practitioners provide ongoing support, regular reviews, and adapt strategies as needed to ensure the plan continues to effectively support the participant and their community of supports in everyday life situations.
