Whether you’re seeking clarity for a diagnosis, support for learning and development, or guidance for future planning, psychological assessments provide valuable insight to help you move forward with confidence.
The range of Psychological Assessments we offer at FABIC include:
Autism Assessment
Do you or your child’s school suspect they may have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including what was previously referred to as Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder or Autistic Disorder?
Perhaps you are now in your adult years and are unsure about whether or not you have ASD. Either way FABIC can support.
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (autism) is considered a lifelong (pervasive) developmental condition that affects how a person relates to his or her environment and their interactions with other people. The common areas of difficulty are social communication, social interaction and restricted or repetitive behaviours and interests.
At FABIC, we see every single person as the Awesome, Amazing and Lovable being that they are. We never judge or define a person by a label. This said, an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis can be highly supportive to better understand the people that we love, and gain access to funding and support that the person needs.
FABIC offers screening for symptoms of autism and we work with other health professionals to support a diagnosis. FABIC has designed a unique holistic assessment program which provides parents, carers and educators with comprehensive insight into what may be needed to support an individual and their carers should an Autism Spectrum Disorder be diagnosed.
Who will benefit?
Any person who suspects they or someone they know has characteristics of an Autism Spectrum Disorder and feels it would be supportive to identify or rule out whether a formal diagnosis is required.
What's involved?
At FABIC, we use two well-recognised diagnostic tools as part of an Autism assessment to help identify traits and support referral for diagnosis if needed; the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2), which has been rated as the most reliable diagnostic tool by international ASD experts, and the Autism Spectrum Rating Scales (ASRS), which identifies symptoms, behaviours and associated features of ASD. On some occasions the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) is also used.
Preparing an Autism Assessment involves the following steps:
- An initial interview with a significant carer (face-to-face, by phone, or online via Telehealth)
- A questionnaire interview with the significant carer
- Two observations in different settings (e.g. home and school) or at two different times in the same setting
- A 50-minute consultation with the client at our Gold Coast clinic
- Information collated and referenced against the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5: American Psychiatric Association)
- A comprehensive written report with recommendations
- A feedback session with the significant carer to review the information in the report
How long does it take?
The assessment process has two steps: (1) the assessment, (2) the report.
Over two to four weeks* we will conduct the assessments at our FABIC Gold Coast clinic, and you will also be given questionnaires to complete.
Once the assessment process is finished and we have received your completed questionnaires, it will take our psychologist four weeks* to review the data and prepare the final report.
*All timeframes are approximate based on participant and clinician availability.
Outcome
A formal report that helps understand how a person experiences the world and identifies whether they have characteristics matching the criteria for a formal diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder. The report also includes recommendations on how best to support the client in their natural setting.
Location
The assessment process will take place at our Gold Coast clinic. An observation of the person in their natural setting(s) will also form part of the assessment.
What are the costs involved?
Costs vary depending on each person’s needs and are based on the clinician’s standard fee (contact FABIC for details).

ADHD Assessment
Do you, your child, or your child’s school suspect they may have ADHD?
Perhaps you’re an adult who has always wondered whether ADHD could explain certain challenges with focus, organisation, or impulsivity. Whatever your stage of life, FABIC is here to support you with comprehensive ADHD assessments and personalised guidance every step of the way:
What is Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, usually first diagnosed in childhood and often lasting well into adulthood.
ADHD is not an intellectual disability or learning disorder, but they can occur together. ADHD impacts global skills and executive functions like the ability to focus, the ability to control emotions and the ability to control impulsive behaviour.
Individuals with ADHD commonly display symptoms relating to inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity, such as:
- Impulsiveness
- Disorganisation and problem prioritising
- Poor time management skills
- Difficulty focusing on a task
- Trouble multi-tasking
- Excessive activity or restlessness
- Poor planning, initiating and completing of goal-directed activities
- Problems regulating emotions, low frustration tolerance
What do I receive in the report?
Our ADHD assessments deliver a well-rounded understanding (rather than judgment) of a person’s difficulties and subsequent non-preferred or unwanted behaviour, as well as recommendations and strategies to support them to develop the skills to live a rewarding and meaningful life and reach their full potential.
What's involved?
- Up to three interviews: with the client, legal guardian, a parent/carer or teacher
- Questionnaires for the client, a teacher and parent/carer
- Report writing
- Feedback session
Test administered:
- Connors Comprehensive Behaviour Rating Scale (Connors-3)
**Vision and hearing tests are also recommended to assess other possible explanations for ADHD-related behaviour - Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System (ABAS – 3)
How long does it take?
The assessment process has two steps: (1) the assessment, (2) the report.
Over the first two weeks* we will conduct the assessments at our FABIC Gold Coast clinic, and you will also be given questionnaires to complete.

Cognitive Assessment (IQ Testing)
Cognitive IQ testing provides in-depth insight into an individual’s intellectual strengths and weaknesses.
Understanding a person’s learning profile can help to identify any areas of deficit or giftedness they may have. The results assist in gaining an understanding as to how a person is likely to learn, receive, process and use new information presented to them. This information can then be used in the development of individual plans.
What areas are assessed?
- Verbal comprehension is the ability to listen to a question, draw on learned information, reason through an answer and express thoughts aloud.
- Perceptual reasoning is the ability to examine a problem, use visual-motor and visual-spatial skills, organise thoughts, create solutions and test those solutions.
- Working memory is the ability to remember new information and hold it in the short-term memory, concentrate and use that information to produce a result or reasoning process.
- Processing speed is the ability to scan, process and identify information accurately.
Which tests do we use?
- Weschler Individual Achievement Test – Second Edition (WIAT-II)
- Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition (WISC – V)
What's involved?
- Up to three interviews – with the client, legal guardian, carer or teacher
- Up to four assessment sessions
- Report writing
- Feedback session to discuss the practical recommendations
Outcome
A detailed report and personalised plan with the information and insights on the individual’s cognitive profile (intellectual strengths and weaknesses) together with recommendations to establish specific teaching and learning practices that enhance the person’s future skills development.
How long does it take?
The assessment process has two steps: (1) the assessment, (2) the report.

Educational Assessment
Educational Assessments bring insight to an individual’s academic strengths and weaknesses.
This assessment is particularly useful for those experiencing difficult behaviour that is affecting their academic performance along with those who are experiencing difficulties managing academic demands at school.
What is an Educational Assessment?
Educational assessments, also known as achievement tests, measure a person’s actual age-level learning achievements and academic skills based on age-equivalent tasks presented.
This will highlight the actual educational development and how it directly influences a person’s experience in a learning environment.
The report resulting from this assessment builds the foundation for an individual learning plan and can provide greater understanding of why certain non-preferred or unwanted behaviours are being used across learning environments.
An Educational Achievement Assessment brings insight to an individual’s academic strengths and weaknesses. The information obtained supports program modification that will assist a person to reach and live their full potential.
What are the benefits?
- Being assessed for listening, speaking, reading, writing, comprehension, mathematics and more
- To determine the need for specific individualised support across learning environments, whether that person appears to be behind or more advanced than their same-aged peers
- Particularly useful for those experiencing non-preferred or unwanted behaviour impacting their learning experience as well as those who are experiencing difficulties responding to the academic demands of their educational facility.
What's involved?
- Up to three interviews – with the client, legal guardian, carer or teacher
- Up to four assessment sessions
- Report writing
- Feedback session to discuss the practical recommendations
Which test do we use?
Weschler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III)
Outcome
A detailed report containing the information and insights on the current learning achievement which is directly influenced by what a person has learned to date.
This information forms the backbone for a personalised and effective Individual learning plan.
How long does it take?
The assessment process has two steps: (1) the assessment, (2) the report.
Over the first two weeks* we will conduct the assessments at our FABIC Gold Coast clinic, and you will also be given questionnaires to complete.

Combined Cognitive & Educational Assessment
Combined Cognitive and Academic Assessments provide a well-rounded understanding of both the person’s natural intellectual ability as well as their current academic achievement.
These tests are particularly relevant when there may be suspected learning difficulties that might influence how a person is experiencing their learning environment. In a behavioural sense, it could be said that ‘they are not meeting their potential’. This often indicates that the person’s intellectual ability in certain areas has been noted as high; however, the actual academic output is low.
What does this test reveal to us?
A person’s strengths and weaknesses and how they use these to approach learning and life
Their intellectual functioning and intelligence quotient (IQ)
The actual academic achievement currently attained
The presence of any learning difficulties or gifted capacity
Areas where learning strategies and recommendations would support
Any link between behaviour and learning challenges
What does it assist with?
Specific learning disabilities
Intellectual disability
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Intellectual giftedness
What's involved?
- Up to three interviews – with the client, legal guardian, carer or teacher
- Up to six testing sessions with the client
- Report writing
- Feedback session to discuss the practical recommendations
Which tests do we use?
- WPPSI-III, WISC-V or WAIS-IV (depending on the person’s age)
- Weschler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III)
Outcome
A detailed report containing the information and insights on the individual’s intellectual and academic strengths and weaknesses with a series of recommendations to establish supportive learning and lifestyle practices for the future.

Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)
A Functional Behaviour Assessment lays the foundation for the development of an individualised intervention plan.
This psychological assessment explores the underlying reasons behind why unwanted behaviours are occurring. Uncovering this “why” is the essential first step toward understanding – and ultimately changing – non-preferred or unwanted behaviours.
The assessment gathers information via interviews and observations and is partially conducted in the environment where the non-preferred behaviour is occurring (i.e. the home, school, work or community setting).
Who will benefit?
A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is commonly requested by organisations or families to help understand why a person is engaging in unwanted behaviours. This understanding allows for the development of effective, lasting behaviour change through positive intervention strategies.
Note: An FBA is a prerequisite for anyone with an NDIS plan who is subject to a restrictive practice; it then forms the foundation for a positive behaviour support plan.
Purpose
To bring understanding to behaviour and offer an individualised intervention plan that, when successfully implemented, will bring about LASTING BEHAVIOUR CHANGE.
What's involved?
- Initial interview with a legal guardian (face-to-face, by phone or telehealth)
- Interviews with other primary carers
- Observation(s) in client’s natural setting(s)
- Interview with the client (if appropriate, done at the same time as the observation and if not, separately)
- Review of any reports and other written information provided to FABIC
- Detailed report highlighting the reasons for unwanted behaviours and recommendations for positive behaviour interventions
- Report feedback session with legal guardian or other appointed person(s)
Outcome
A detailed report with the perceived reasons of the behaviour and a series of recommendations and practical tools for lasting behaviour change.
How long does it take?
The assessment process has two steps: (1) the assessment, (2) the report.
Over four to six weeks* we will conduct the assessments at our FABIC Gold Coast clinic, and you will also be given questionnaires to complete.
Once the assessment process is finished and we have received your completed questionnaires, it will take our psychologist four weeks* to review the data and prepare the final report.

Do FABIC psychologists provide diagnoses?
FABIC psychologists conduct comprehensive psychological assessments and provide detailed reports with observations, findings, and recommendations. However, we do not make formal medical diagnoses. To obtain a formal diagnosis (for example, for Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD), our assessment report can be taken to a psychiatrist or paediatrician, who will review the information and make the formal diagnosis (if applicable). Our approach is to offer clear insights and practical recommendations to guide next steps, support planning, and access to relevant services or funding.
What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Behaviour Support Practitioner?
A psychologist focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental health and emotional issues using a range of evidence-based therapeutic techniques. They often work with clients to explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, aiming for improved mental wellbeing and personal growth. The services of a Psychologist are usually delivered one-to-one.
A Behaviour Support Practitioner specialises in understanding and addressing challenging or unwanted behaviours – often in the context of disability or developmental needs. One of the key roles of a BSP is to work with the entire support team around a person, to ensure that everyone is on the same page to implement the behaviour change strategies outlined in the client’s behaviour support plan.
While psychologists and behaviour support practitioners may work closely together, psychologists focus more broadly on mental health, and behaviour support practitioners specialise in behaviour change strategies.
Do you accept WorkCover clients?
Yes – we accept WorkCover insurance clients.
