This chart provides some visual prompts that support conversational skills and verbal cues that can be used as prompts to start a sentence in conversations.

The purpose of the questions is to support connection with another person and send a message of ‘I am interested in finding out about you’.

For example, if a person is ready to share about their holiday experience, we could ask:

  • Who did you spend time with?
  • What did you do on your holidays?
  • Where did you spend time on your holidays?
  • When did you go on holidays?
  • Why did you choose that place for your holidays?
  • How did you feel about your holidays?

These prompts can also be used in reverse to support people to have sentence starters when they share about themselves in regards to a particular topic. For example, if asked ‘what did you do on your holidays?’ you can share:

  • Who you spent time with
  • What you were doing on your holidays
  • Where you spent time on your holidays
  • When you went on your holidays
  • Why you went on your holiday
  • How you felt about your holidays
